West Bengal Board Class 10 English Lesson 8 The Snail Solution with Bangla Translation

Lesson 8: The Snail by William Cowper

The author and the text:

William Cowper (1731-1800) was one of the most popular poets of his time.
Cowper changed the direction of 18th century nature poetry by writing about the English countryside and the everyday lives of people.
His famous works include Olney Hymns and The Task.
The poem takes us into the private world of a snail, where it is seen to lead a self sufficient life.
We are allowed to observe, in minute detail, the small yet self contained world in which a snail lives.

The Text

To grass, or leaf, or fruit, or wall
The snail sticks close, nor fears to fall
As if he grew there, house and all,
Together.

Within that house secure he hides
When danger imminent betides
Of storm, or other harm besides
Of weather.

Give but his horns the slightest touch,
His self-collecting pow’r is such,
He shrinks into his house with much
Displeasure.

Where’er he dwells, he dwells alone,
Except himself has chatells none,
Well satisfied to be his own
Whole treasure.

Thus, hermit-like, his life he leads,
Not partner of his banquet needs,
And if he meets one, only feeds
The faster.

Who seeks him must be worse than blind,
(He and his house are so combined)
If, finding it, he fails to find
Its master.

The Telegraph,

Sir,

Through the esteemed columns of your newspaper, I wish to draw attention to the severe disturbance caused by the indiscriminate use of loudspeakers in our locality.

The constant blaring from various events throughout the day and night has made a peaceful life impossible. Students cannot concentrate on their studies, the ill cannot rest, and the elderly are denied their peace. This thoughtless act is a serious form of noise pollution that affects everyone’s health and well-being.

I earnestly request the concerned authorities to enforce strict rules regarding the timing and volume of loudspeaker usage. Your highlighting of this issue can prompt necessary action and give us back our right to silence.

Thanking you,

Yours sincerely,
Rohit Sharma
A concerned resident
Park Street, Kolkata – 700071
